I have used some of these sites and have earned money. There are a few companies that do pull scams and I have been scammed before. I don't like doing the paid to read emails but the paid to sign up and trial offers are were the money is.
I've never been scammed by any of the companies I've tried out through the sites. However, before doing any trial, my advice is to read the terms and conditions carefully. I'm willing to bet the vast majority of problems people encounter with these services is when they don't read the terms and then get surprised when they get charged after their trial is over (or get charged a shipping / processing fee that was outlined in the "fine print").
I also recommend you google a company to see what others have to say about them. Even the best company will have a few complaints but a trustworthy company shouldn't have overwhelmingly negative reviews.
